Carmella 4th February 2018

Nigel Since hearing the sad and devastating news of Nigel‘s passing this week, thoughts and memories of him and the lovely Evans family have been tumbling round in our heads. We somehow think that our friends from the past will always be there with us and it’s such a shock to realise that when they are gone, a part of us has gone with them too. We want to let you all know, Fiona, Mark, Stuart, Kirsten and all your families that we are thinking of you and sending you our love and support at this very sad time. Our families go back a long way and with the various twists and turns of fate, our lives have been intertwined on many levels. In fact, it was Nigel who was the pivotal person and original key to our happiness, as it was through him, that Daniel and Carmella were introduced to each other. Daniel first met Nigel when they were at Cape Town University together, and a mutual friend brought Nigel out to stay at the house Daniel had borrowed in Hermanus. They took an immediate liking to each other. When Nigel then went to Oxford University he met Daniel’s brother, and they became good friends, so Daniel and Nigel met again and saw each other quite often. Nigel was always the worldly-wise big brother in the Evans Suffolk household and the Peake girls (Tamara and Carmella) got to know him well, during their many happy times with Mark and Stuart, including joining an Evans family ski trip with Elizabeth and Nigel. When Daniel later went to study at Oxford, Nigel was just leaving, so he made it possible for Daniel to take over his quaint little flat on the canal at 13 Upper Fisher Row for 3 happy years. During this time, it was through Nigel’s friendship with both Harriet Griffey (Carmella’s oldest friend), and Ed Jackson (a friend of Daniel), that Carmella and Daniel met. Nigel also went on to play a key role in the success of the Peake family restaurant “Pippin” in Hampstead and then became apple packhouse manager on the farm. The Peake family will always be grateful for the contribution that he made to the success of their various businesses. So our lives have crossed paths and been intertwined with Nigel’s in many ways, and his friendship brought many good things into our lives and will be treasured and always remembered. He was a lovely, kind, clever man with a brilliant sense of humour and is a very sad, great loss to us all. Thinking of you… Daniel and Carmella Meyer
